Anatomy is the science that studies the structure and the form of different organisms, including humans, and the relationships of their parts. You will study structure - from the whole human body to the tissue, cellular and sub-cellular level, and relate structure to function in the adult and during embryonic development. The anatomy of other species are also considered. Your theoretical study is underpinned by practical experience in our excellent dissecting room facilities. The understanding of anatomy and the different anatomical systems (e.g. skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, nervous systems) and components (e.g. muscle cells, neurons) has a major repercussion in modern medicine, pathology and in the comprehension of human evolution.

Graduates from 'with a modern language' programmes are extremely desirable to employers who require significant relevant work experience. In the growing field of international bioscience research collaborations, graduates with a good command of a foreign language are at a distinct advantage. Many of our graduates secure jobs as researchers working in universities, pharmaceutical and bioscience companies and institutes. Some of our graduates progress into laboratory-based careers in clinical or technical roles which do not involve research. A proportion of Anatomical Sciences graduates chose to move on to careers in the healthcare sector e.g. allied health professions such as physiotherapy and medicine, most of which require further study. These programmes require demonstration of significant work experience to gain a place on their course. The transferable skills you will develop will also leave you well equipped for a wide range of careers outside the lab. Recent graduates of Anatomical Sciences have secured roles as: Scientific Research Assistant at a university Secondary Science Teacher Medical Laboratory Assistant for the NHS Cardiac Physiologist for the NHS Senior Research Assistant at a biotechnology company Clinical Physiologist for the NHS Anatomical Sciences Graduate Profile: Melissa Surgey: Management Trainee, NHS Graduate Management Training.
