Course Description

What is language? What does language tell us about the human mind? What does language tell us about where people come from and who they are? Why do languages change over time? Why do we speak differently to different people? Is the English language becoming debased? Studying Linguistics at Victoria you will explore these questions, and much more. The academic staff who teach in the Linguistics Programme are highly esteemed internationally for their research in areas including second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, language variation and change, languages of the Pacific region, psycholinguistics, workplace communication and linguistic theory. Linguistics students are directly exposed to this research in our teaching. Language is important for everything we do, from going to the shops to making our computers do what we want. It is one of the major things that distinguishes us from other animals. Linguistics graduates gain skills in analysis, collecting data for research, presentation of complex data, creativity and flexibility—which are valued in diverse fields, from language teaching to policy analysis to software design.
