MSci Biomedical Science (with Foundation Year)

Course Description

Duration: Five years full-time; six years sandwich The integrated MSci in Biomedical Science is particularly aimed at students who are interested in careers in research. This is facilitated by providing an additional year of advanced research skills study over the BSc(Hons) Biomedical Science. By studying MSci Biomedical Science you will gain a scientific understanding of the biology of disease, and its diagnosis and treatment, up to BSc level. Then you will take an integrated fifth year at Masters level, which includes an extended research project. You will develop skills that are at the forefront of advances in medical science so when you graduate, you will be equipped with analytical, problem-solving and communication abilities and be able to compete for exciting and rewarding opportunities working or studying in biomedical research. The MSci in Biomedical Science offers a hands-on approach to learning. Beginning with a strong foundation in modern biomedicine, including basic scientific core subjects, the study of biomedical science specialist subjects is integrated through a study of the biology of disease. Working at the cutting-edge of biomedical science and using state-of-the-art equipment, our focus on the application of science in the real-world will prepare you for a variety of exciting careers. In the fifth year of study, the teaching and research will develop your advanced research skills: MSci projects are aligned to areas of research excellence as you work alongside research-focused academic staff. You will experience engaging and outstanding learning, teaching and support services throughout your student journey, fully utilising advances in technology to support your academic and professional development. Besides in-depth subject-specific training in research, you will gain transferable skills applicable to broader areas such as management, finance and marketing.

The majority of our graduates follow careers in biomedical sciences in particular, research and development work in the healthcare, pharmaceutical and education sectors. As well as research and laboratory-based jobs in the public and private sectors, the course equips you with the transferable skills demanded by employers recruiting for a wide variety of roles from medical sales and scientific writing to quality control and health and safety. Some graduates have used their qualification to successfully support applications for mature entry to medicine degrees, while many choose to continue their studies with MPhil/PhD research degrees.
