Course Description

The first year provides the context for a study of finance. You would study the legal, economic and business contexts as well as introductory accounting and quantitative methods. Year 1 * Introductory finance * Personal financial planning * Quantitative skills * Financial accounting * Management accounting and IT * Law In Year Two you will develop more specialist financial knowledge including corporate finance, econometrics, and portfolio theory. You will also develop your awareness of financial reporting and taxation. Year 2 * Finance * Financial reporting * Taxation * Debt, investment and risk * Pension and retirement planning * Enterprise management In your final year you will study behavioural finance, international finance, public finance, and advanced financial reporting. You will experience trading in the simulated environment of our trading room and you will be introduced to academic research in finance. Year 3 * Financial management * Theory and practice of equity trading * FSA regulation, law and compliance * Finance research * Private investment advice and management * Choice of options

Career outcomes

This degree has been developed in conjunction with employers, the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), and the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI). As such, graduates will be prepared for careers in financial planning, investment management, consultancy and financial services. Career prospects The financial services industry is one of the biggest and most lucrative of any sector covering a broad range of products and services offered by financial institutions. This course prepares you for a career in a variety of areas including banks, investment, consultancy and equity trading. Work/study placements At the University of South Wales, you can also choose to study over four years, so you can spend a year in the workplace to gain practical experience and put what you have learnt into practice. You could also apply for a short-term (up to three months) placement as part of your final year of study (subject to validation). A great option if you want a mixture of academic and practical learning, teaching and assessment.
