Course Description

Studying German alongside archaeology gives you a greater insight into the historical and cultural development of a Germanic country. First-year German will develop your existing skills and knowledge with advanced practice in oral and written communication. You'll study contemporary German society and its historical contexts, as well as German writing in its social and literary contexts. In the second year your language study gets more advanced and you start to combine it with optional modules which include linguistics, literature, society and politics, history, philosophy and film studies. In the Archaeology half of your degree you'll study archaeological and textual evidence and follow a range of other modules which will deepen your understanding of archaeological knowledge generation. You'll spend your third year abroad, usually as a student at a university, as a language assistant in a school, or on an approved work placement. We also have a number of places on summer courses in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.
