For the MSc, students study eight taught courses and a research project. Diploma students take eight taught courses only; Certificate students select four. Courses are chosen from a range that covers applications of psychology in: leadership, the management of change, education, public health, criminal justice; consumer behaviour and marketing, product design, provision for an ageing population, promotion of healthy relationships, abnormal development. A course in research methods is also offered. Some courses are available in Distance Learning format, and the programme may be followed through a mixture of this route with attendance on campus.

This programme is designed for people with a first degree in psychology, or in any social science, science or humanities disciplines that included some introductory psychology. The programme focuses entirely on applied psychology, reflecting the distinctive practical emphasis of the subject at Heriot-Watt, and trains students to apply knowledge of psychological theory and evidence to solving real-world problems. Assessment is by coursework and examinations.
