The Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences (BSBS) offers a series of programs under the Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences. This thorough, but flexible undergraduate program provides an excellent preparation for graduate education in life sciences or professional degree programs. The coursework can prepare students for health science professional schools of medicine, dentistry, veterinary, pharmacy, optometry, podiatry, chiropractic practice or to train to be a physician assistant. The B.S. in Biomedical Sciences meet all the admission requirements for medical/health professional schools and also prepare students for entry into the technical work force in the biotechnology and/or pharmaceutical industry as well as to support academic research endeavors in federally funded research programs. The undergraduate program offers courses in the biomedical sciences including anatomy, molecular biology, cell biology, neurobiology, physiology, microbiology, and immunology. There are approximately 3000 students enrolled in the department’s undergraduate major in Biomedical Sciences. In addition, we serve UCF students in a variety of other fields. Last year over 14,000 UCF students were enrolled in our courses. Students may enrich their education by participating in one of several student organizations or by working with faculty on directed research. The diverse research interests of the faculty in the department create a very rich environment for interdisciplinary research. Our faculty has expertise in a wide range of biomedical science specialties, including microbiology, immunology, infectious disease, cardiovascular biology, neurobiology, molecular biology, molecular parasitology, biotechnology, cancer biology and nanoscience. Besides the core degree program, there are two available Tracks and one concentration that may appeal to students depending on their interests. These are listed below: Track in Molecular Microbiology Track in Molecular Cell Biology Pre-professional concentration The program encourages and strongly supports participation of undergraduates in the exciting research being conducted by the faculty in cancer, cardiovascular, neurodegenerative,and infectious diseases. The department is one of the most rapidly expanding departments at the university, offering outstanding research and educational opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral trainees and faculty.
