The Master of Arts degree may serve as a complete program in a specific discipline or as a first stage of graduate study. If a student has provisional (initial) certification at the secondary level in the same discipline as the MA, application for permanent (professional) certification may be made upon completion of the degree, providing the student has at least two years of full-time teaching experience in the area of certification.
