Career outcomes

Possible areas of graduate employment include: advertising; arts and cultural management; broadcasting; cinema distribution exhibition; entertainment industries; marketing; news production; publishing; and television research. Stuart Brunton BA (Hons) Media My main passion before starting at QMU was music. I chose media as a way to study the music industry as well as broaden my knowledge of other media industries with a view to getting more insight into what I might want to do with my life! Luckily I found that in video production and was able to combine this and music in my final year dissertation. For me the first three years were enjoyable as there was a lot of variety; video production, journalism, web design, film study, and new media technologies. This range of subjects gave a good overview of media and an idea of what area someone might want to specialise in the future. Surprisingly to many people, I enjoyed fourth year the most as I liked the researching my dissertation which was about how music impacts narrative in film. This included a case study on the Cohen Brothers. The standard of teaching was very high; I always felt that lecturers were experts in their field and very knowledgeable. I felt very supported whilst studying as there was always someone keen to help. In in my final year I produced a film for the QMU inauguration ceremony as an additional piece of work. It was through the support I received during this time that helped me further my skills in video production. When I left QMU I spent a year doing some freelance film work for community projects and local companies in Edinburgh and. I also set up my own business with a friend running a music studio. Now I am a Senior Producer at RBS as part of the in-house production team where we produce a variety of video content for internal training and information along with advertising for sponsorships like the RBS 6 Nations. I am keen to progress my career in video production but I don't have a particular aspiration to specialise in any specific area. QMU has a lot to offer over and above its courses. There are a number of great activities and clubs in which to get involved. Also, you get the chance to meet a lot of people who you can learn from and who can help you develop your skills. This side of it, together with the courses on offer, make QMU a great place to go and study.
