Bachelors in History

Course Description

OUR STUDENTS learn about American culture wars and European total wars, the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic World, the history of science and the science of history. They study statecraft and spycraft, magic and medicine, utopias and dystopias, slavery and revolution, imperialism and nationalism, and capitalism and its discontents. History is, after all, as rich and diverse as the human experience, and – selecting from more than 50 classes per semester, most of which feature small-group discussions of fewer than 20 members – our students pursue interests, develop capacities, and foster relationships that last long after they leave Washington Square. OUR MAJOR helps students make the most of their time at NYU. We welcome double majors and history minors, so that our students can pair their studies with majors such as economics or politics, tracks such as pre-health or pre-law, or specializations such as area studies and foreign languages. We enable our students to pursue their own interests, through independent studies, internships, capstone seminars, and the honors program. And we encourage our students to study away at any of NYU’s global sites, so they can explore, for example, imperialism in London, the Cold War in Berlin, the Renaissance in Florence, public health in Accra, or the world economy in Shanghai.
