Course Description

The Bachelor of Arts in Music program with an Emphasis in Piano is designed for serious students who wish to devote themselves to developing musical skills, understanding composition and refining their performance skills. Graduates with a piano major may aspire to teach private lessons, own their own piano studio or work at a church as a pianist or accompanist. Other students may wish to pursue a master‛s degree after graduation to increase their skillset for a career as a performing artist. The bachelor‛s degree in music is a true liberal arts degree, allowing participation in varied performing ensembles and studies while simultaneously preparing students for a variety of careers both within and outside the field. Coursework for those looking to earn a degree with a piano major includes topics such as music theory and history, counterpoint, voice, piano and choral ensemble. Students also study the various organizational structures in music, from motive, phrase and period, through binary and ternary forms to the most complex, such as variation, rondo and sonata. In addition, students study the fundamentals and techniques of conducting choral and instrumental music and the special techniques required to conduct different ensembles. Students are provided with a study on piano literature including baroque, classical, romantic and contemporary periods. Emphasis is placed on learning the standard piano repertoire through reading and listening assignments. Additional studies include piano pedagogy and accompanying skills.
