Apprenticeship - Sound and Communication

Course Description

One of the primary components of the Sound and Communications Industry (also called the low voltage industry) is voice data video. Voice Data Video has been the fastest growing category in the Sound and Communications field. Other areas of the Sound and Communications Industry include Audio Video Systems, Security and Fire/Life Safety Systems, fiber networks, including LAN and WAN, building automation controls, wireless communication systems, television distribution systems, and closed circuit television. It is an interesting and evolving field with exciting growth potential. The apprenticeship is an earn-while-you-learn program involving paid “full time” work and related classes.

Career outcomes

Students gain expertise and hands-on experience as they work on Sound & Communication systems to include: voice systems, data systems, video systems, fire alarm systems, home alarm systems, data networking systems, cabling and automation systems. These specialized skills are acquired through on-the-job training (OJT) and classroom instruction and lead to employment in the construction and service industry. After 3 years of classroom and work experience students are recognized as journeypersons in the Sound & Communication trade for the electrical industry.
