BA (Hons) Education Studies and Special Educational Needs & Inclusion

Course Description

Education Studies In Education Studies, carefully structured work placement forms an integral component of this course and we make sure that you have plenty of time in schools or, if you prefer, other educational settings. Currently you can choose from placements in primary or secondary schools as well as colleges and a wide variety of other educational settings, such as outdoor pursuit centres, centres to re-engage disaffected young people, heritage sites and art galleries. This means that you have a superb opportunity to experience work in a range of educational settings and to build up a sound portfolio of professional and transferable skills, all of which will help you to make fully informed choices about your potential career path and have the potential to make you more attractive to an employer. The Education Studies element of the course aims to provide you with an excellent understanding of education - in its widest sense - and is designed for those who are interested in a career in primary or secondary teaching, for those who are interested in other education-related opportunities, or for those who simply want to keep their options open. All topics within Education Studies are studied in the immediate context of today's educational systems, both in the UK and beyond, and you will critically debate education policy and practice to get beneath the skin of the ever-changing face of modern education. Special Educational Needs and Inclusion This course is designed to develop your knowledge and understanding of Special Educational Needs and Inclusion (SENI). You will challenge your own beliefs and values, equipping you with the confidence and competence to make a difference to your own life and the lives of others. You will have the opportunity to examine legislation and contrast it with the reality of provision through placements in a choice of different settings. These may be within special schools, health services or in the community and voluntary sectors. You will develop understanding and skills in meeting the individual needs of different groups across society whilst learning about educating, supporting, empowering and caring for others in the community, constantly developing self-advocacy skills through intellectually inspiring learning programmes. Some students will have the opportunity to visit other specialist institutions outside the UK. This course offers opportunities to combine both theory and practical experience of Inclusive Education in different contexts, such as Inclusive Practice, and issues of social, cultural and personal relevance. You will be presented with many opportunities to learn about special education provision whilst developing skills for your future career, with excellent employment avenues in the fields of teaching, care, youth and community services amongst others.
