Course Description

The study of Māori Media and Communication explores indigenous expression across new and emerging communication practices including social media, Māori broadcasting, film and creative performing arts. When you study Māori Media and Communication you'll gain an understanding of traditional and contemporary forms of Māori communication. You'll explore the historical, political, cultural and social contexts of media and communication practices and how these relate to and interact with Māori communities and Māori cultural preferences. The programme will set you up with a foundation to develop the skills to analyse and comment critically on the development of Māori media, policy creation and the representation of Māori in modern practices. Māori Media and Communication will provide you with exciting opportunities and a pathway into careers such as Māori Television, Māori and tribal radio, Māori public relations or Māori publishing houses. Industry work placements are also available.
