BMedSci(Speech Science)

Course Description

This four-year course is accredited by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists. It qualifies you to practise as a therapist. You'll learn through case-based study and small-group teaching. The emphasis is on integrating theoretical knowledge with clinical expertise. The course is divided into five tracks. You take modules in each of these areas each year. The idea is to turn you into a strong all-rounder, someone with practical skills as well as theoretical, scientific and medical knowledge. The tracks are: Communication track Linguistics, psychology and how they relate to speech and language pathology. Participation and society track How sociology and social and health psychology impact on speech and language therapy. Research track The research skills you need to provide evidence-based health care. Biomedical sciences track In-depth understanding of anatomy, physiology, audiology and neurology, and how to link this medical knowledge to speech and language pathology. Clinical topics and placements track Clinical skills and professional competence, enabling you to work with a range of clients with different communication impairments. Career outcomes

Our BMedSci graduates are recognised as qualified speech and language therapists. They go into rewarding careers in paediatrics, children's special needs, adult learning disability and adult neurology. Many go on to postgraduate education and research. Our BSc graduates are making a difference in areas such as education, social work and research. Some go on to postgraduate study, qualifying as psychologists, teachers, doctors or speech and language therapists.
