In addition, the skillset developed during postgraduate research, including the ability to work in independently as well as in teams to solve complex problems, the ability to critically assess large volumes of information and proven communication skills, are highly desired by employers. The School of Materials Science and Engineering has one of the largest and most active programs in postgraduate research in Australia. The School’s staff normally lead UNSW in research grant success, journal publication rates, and postgraduate supervision/graduation. A Masters by Research degree requires completion of an original piece of research, more limited in scope and nature than that required for a PhD. Candidates develop mastery of appropriate methodology and they present their findings in the wider context of their discipline.
