Fluids Engineering in Liverpool is home to world-class researchers in the fields of fluid mechanics and soft matter. Subject Overview Our areas of interest are broad and cover a range of activities including: CFD method development; transition, turbulence and drag reduction; aerodynamics; soft matter including non-Newtonian fluid flows and rheology; tidal stream turbines; multiphase flows and droplet dynamics. In particular: Wall-bounded turbulent flows, such as boundary layers, pipe and channel flows using advanced experimental techniques, such as stereoscopic PIV measurements, to study fundamental features of the complex turbulent flow with the purpose to optimise mixing, heat transfer, and frictional drag in industrial applications. Drop impact dynamics and capillary breakup of complex fluids, such as polymer solutions or gels, and concentrated colloidal suspensions with applications in food processing, inkjet printing or manufacturing, dispensing systems. The Fluids Engineering group also has a strong expertise in the rheology and fluid dynamics of complex fluids, such as polymer solutions and melts, surfactant solutions, colloidal particle suspensions, foams, emulsions, gels and pastes, with applications in process engineering, biopharmaceuticals, home and personal care products, food, and cosmetics.
