Course Description

The degree of BVSc enables you to acquire the professional skills, knowledge and experience necessary to qualify as a Veterinary Surgeon. The first three years of the BVSc programme provide the groundwork for preclinical and paraclinical skills. The fourth and final years are clinical, and are based at the Leahurst campus. UCAS Choices Candidates must select only four programmes for Veterinary Science. The remaining choice should be used for applications to other degree programmes. This will not prejudice your application. You will also complete a research project. The clinical course includes substantial amounts of practical small group teaching. You have a choice of elective subjects, which are studied in greater depth. Currently 26 weeks of clinical extra-mural study are completed between Years Three and Five. Students receive special training in communication skills. Students may also undertake an intercalated degree and extend their programme Why this subject? Excellent facilities. Teaching is delivered mainly by three Departments: Veterinary Preclinical Sciences, Veterinary Paraclinical Sciences and Veterinary Clinical Sciences, which are based at the University’s Liverpool and Leahurst campuses. Clinical facilities are excellent and include the renowned Philip Leverhulme Equine Hospital and £10 million Small Animal Teaching Hospital which has the most advanced facilities of any small animal hospital in the UK. Clinical teaching benefits from the high clinical caseload in our three teaching hospitals. We are also ideally situated for access to Chester Zoo with whom we share close associations with. Innovation. We offer an innovative BVSc programme, the first of its kind in a UK vet school, designed with the advice of consultants from several animal related industries. We have developed a forward looking undergraduate curriculum, with opportunities to study many topical issues. Our Veterinary Science programme is taught using a mix of casebased learning with didactic teaching and gives life-long problem solving skills along with an essential knowledge base. We offer over a century of excellence and innovation in teaching, learning and research and regularly review our programme. Student experience. We offer the full university experience: the first three years are spent at the City Centre campus. The final clinical years are spent at the Leahurst campus on the Wirral peninsula. MRCVS Membership. Successful completion of the BVSc leads to registration as a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS) and eligibility to practise as a veterinary surgeon in the UK and elsewhere in the EU.

Career outcomes

The vast majority of veterinary students find employment within six months of graduation. Most newly qualified vets choose to work in private veterinary practices. Others decide to work for animal charities, in laboratories, abattoirs, industry or the public health sector, and some pursue careers in research. Others go on to higher degrees, for example PhDs, or further studies to obtain professional qualifications eg in Veterinary Science.
