Mechanical Engineering BEng (Hons)

Course Description

This programme gives you the opportunity to become someone who influences the creation of the products we use in our everyday lives from the simple bicycle to the complex racing car where the Mechanical Engineer is involved in the research, design, development and production of the vehicle. A degree in Mechanical Engineering is the basis for a career in a profession that offers an extremely wide choice of employment. Mechanical Engineers are employed in most industries, not just in a technical capacity but also in sales, marketing and in managerial roles. Department Key Facts Number of first year students 302 Number of applications per year 2,391 Graduate prospects 89.9% of our graduates are employed or in further study within 6 months of graduating. (Destination of Leavers from Higher Education Report 2007/08). Department resources Excellent experimental and computing facilities that support a wide portfolio of single-discipline and interdisciplinary research. Materials has the 2nd highest proportion in the UK classified as world-leading. Four core subjects Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Solid Mechanics and Dynamics will form the backbone of your studies and give you a sound foundation in Mechanical Engineering principles. Year One includes major active learning activities: a one-week icebreaker group project as well as a one-week team project to design, build and test either a small rocket aor a wind-powered car. In the final year, you will learn about their applications in Heat Transfer, Viscous Fluid Flow, Structural Failure Modes and Vibration and Control. Throughout the programme, you will study the complementary topics of Mathematics, Computing, Materials Science, Electrical Circuits and Computer- Aided Design using the package ProENGINEER. Design projects, and a major individual project in your final year, will help you bring all these various strands together.
