This four-year programme provides an extended education in Mechanical and Materials Engineering which is the preferred route to register as a chartered engineer. You will be taught by leading materials scientists and engineers who are also involved in the UK Centre for Materials Education and our programmes are all accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. The first two years are common with the BEng programme (HJ35), and cover core aspects of both mechanical engineering and materials engineering topics. In Year Three and Four the programme focuses on Materials topics including advanced alloys, composites, smart materials, materials design, microstructure, corrosion and oxidation, laser processing, composite materials and physical analytical methods. In Year Four, the materials modules are designed to develop an in-depth understanding of a range of materials in modern technology, state of art research and industrial practice. Modules may for instance include advanced aspects of materials microstructure optimisation, semiconductor device fabrication, nanotechnology or biomaterials. During your third and fourth years, you will also undertake an extended individual research project chosen from an extensive list of materials related topics, and work alongside mechanical and general engineers in your group based engineering Capstone project. These MEng Capstone projects are a key part of all professional engineering degrees, and you will become the materials specialist in a group which will be working on a design-build-test project, normally industry-led or perhaps part of our Formula Student activity.
