Chemical engineers are responsible for the development, design and operation of processes that produce materials and products that we all depend on, from fresh water and gas supplies to our homes, to products such as polymers, fertilisers, fuels, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, foodstuffs, paints, silicon chips, synthetic skin and many more. In all fields the chemical engineer needs to balance the need to manufacture products economically with meeting safety and environmental requirements.
