This course combines degree level learning of French, Spanish or Japanese language with the study of translation issues and media in today’s fast-changing world. You can begin your degree-level study if you have A level or GCSE in these languages. For Japanese or Spanish you can also start from beginners level. The third year is spent in a country where your honours language is spoken. Alongside your chosen language you will have the opportunity to choose from a range of specialist modules in culture, society, translation and media. Translation competence modules will cover the theory and technique of translating, and questions of style and register in a range of specialised areas. An optional work experience module provides the opportunity to experience professional translation first-hand. In the translation issues modules, which deal with issues associated with globalisation, you will be looking at various translation types, for example the transposition of text between languages, media and genres, multilingual publications, multilingual websites or IT-mediated texts, film subtitles, and theatre. The Course Profile tab lists all the compulsory and optional modules available each year.
