The Pacific Studies programme aims to enhance students' knowledge and understanding of the societies and cultures of New Zealand's Pacific Island neighbours, as well as their history and contemporary issues of politics and economics. The programme also aims to increase the awareness of the diverse backgrounds of New Zealand's Pacific communities, who have often been regarded as an homogeneous group.

Pacific Studies prepares students for careers in a wide range of fields including teaching, government, foreign service, community development, museum management and organisational management.
