Plant biology encompasses research areas as diverse as cell and molecular biology, genetics, ecology and physiology. Ecology is central to developing sustainable conservation strategies. Sophisticated molecular techniques now allow us to modify plants to improve their performance. Plants provide sources of food and fuel, can act as ‘green factories’ producing products such as new drugs and plastics and can help to clean up polluted environments.
