Course Description

Language & Linguistics will introduce you to, among other things, how human language and speech may have evolved, the complex functions and structures of language in its role as a bridge between sound and meaning, the ways in which we acquire languages as children and adults, the ways in which languages vary, and the mechanisms by which they change over time.

Students who choose to specialise in Language & Linguistics at undergraduate level will be well qualified to apply for postgraduate degrees in, for example, speech and language pathology and therapy; English and foreign language teaching; publishing; journalism and broadcasting; and areas relating to information and communication technology. Linguistics at Aberdeen itself offers one taught Masters programme: Professional Communication. A further MSc in the Teaching of English as a Second or Other Language will be to complete an MLitt by Research in Linguistics.
