The Department has a long tradition of research and postgraduate research supervision. It is well-housed with high quality computing facilities. The library is adjacent to the Department and its mathematics holdings reflect the long history of the Department. The Department has large research groups in the areas of Topology, Representation Theory and Group Theory. In all its areas of research, the members of the Department are involved in world-wide collaborations and many research workers, PhD students to senior researchers, visit the Department.

Students with PhD degrees in Mathematics are recruited by universities, research institutes, and a range of industrial and commercial organisations.
