Medical physics examines and applies numerous aspects of nuclear science to medicine. Medical physicists can have direct contact with patients, or work behind the scenes, but are part of many treatment and diagnostic teams. For all applications of radiation to patients (Radiation Therapy or Diagnostic Imaging), a medical physicist is involved with: choosing and accepting new radiation machines / imaging equipment, ongoing machine / equipment quality assurance, individual patient radiation therapy plans, and radiation protection of the employees working with these modalities. Medical physicists play a significant role in the practice of medicine today.
