The PhD program in Electrical and Computer Engineering prepares students to do original research on ECE topics and to become technical leaders in their fields. It has a strong and growing reputation, as graduates from the department have become professors at other universities and researchers in various industrial and government research centers. Students may choose a research emphasis in areas such as communications, networking, computer engineering, control and robotics, signal processing, electronics, and bioengineering. ECE faculty have research projects sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, DARPA, and other granting agencies, in addition to industrial sponsors. For more information about the department's ongoing programs, see our research pages which contain a listing of research labs or individual faculty homepages. The ECE PhD is open to full-time and part-time students. To find out more about the program use the menu at the left or see the detailed description in the current academic year Mason Catalog, in the section dedicated to ECE PhD in the chapter about the Volgenau School, ECE Department .
