Studying in a faculty The University has four faculties and each course leading to a degree is administered by one of these faculties. You will belong to the same faculty throughout your time with us and most of the subjects you study will be offered by schools or departments within this faculty. Admission to the BSc (Hons) Computer Science and Logic & Philosophy of Science programme of study is through the Faculty of Science. The programme details of this course are provided by: School of Computer Science: The School of Computer Science at St Andrews is one of the best in the world. Students and staff are usually on first-name terms, getting to know each other through small tutorial groups, laboratory sessions and informal contact. School of Philosophical, Anthropological and Film Studies: Distinctive features of this course As a Joint Honours degree student you will study both subjects equally offering you a wide choice of options within subjects. You will engage with a number of specialist topics including for example databases, programming language design and implementation, operating systems, logic, security, component technology, software engineering, artificial intelligence and computer graphics. The study of logic, which is the science of correct reasoning and which laid the foundations of modern computational science, and the study of the nature of science as a whole. Both elements emphasise skills of criticism and analysis, clear thinking and argument - skills which complement other studies in the sciences and which are of great use in future careers. You can expect to engage with a number of specialist topics including for example questions such as: What differentiates truth from falsehood, reality from mere appearance? What is scientific evidence, and how does it lend support to one theory or another? You will study the arguments and conclusions of philosophers working on these problems, and to provide students with the means of thinking critically and rationally about these topics themselves. Staff in St Andrews are at the forefront of research in their varied fields of philosophy, and this expertise and enthusiasm is put to great use in teaching courses at all levels.
