Course Description

Studying in a faculty The University has four faculties and each course leading to a degree is administered by one of these faculties. You will belong to the same faculty throughout your time with us and most of the subjects you study will be offered by schools or departments within this faculty. Admission to the MA (Hons) English and Italian programme of study is through the Faculty of Arts. The programme details of this course are provided by: School of English: The School of English enjoys an international reputation as a centre for both academic research and literary creativity. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008), the School had 70% of its research and writing rated as 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent'. The School's richest inheritance, however, is its collegiality: we pride ourselves on our friendliness, and on our common enthusiasm for great literature. School of Modern Languages: The School of Modern Languages houses seven subjects – Arabic, Comparative Literature, French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish – and three Research Institutes – European Cultural Identity Studies, Contemporary and Comparative Literature, and Linguistics. We are one of the leading Schools of Modern Languages and Literatures in the UK and we are the first in Scotland. Our results in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008) were excellent, with German rated second in the UK, French fourth and Spanish ninth. Our teaching and research are inextricably linked through a combination of high-powered training in languages, literatures and cultures and modern pedagogic methods and world leading scholarship in subjects ranging from medieval to twenty-first century texts.
