With the global market increasing, there is a huge demand for those with analytical and technical skills who can also speak a foreign language. The BSc in Mathematics and Spanish at the University of Southampton combines the study of Spanish and Mathematics at an advanced level and you will be able to spend your third year abroad studying Mathematics. You will make new friends, gain a deep understanding of Spanish culture and sharpen your language skills, and will also demonstrate your independence to future employers. As people in different countries in Europe and in the world work together more and more closely, it is important to understand from first-hand experience how other countries and cultures work, and to be comfortable in a foreign language and culture. At the same time, as business, political decision making, public and private sector management and the social sciences are becoming more quantitative in their methods, making mathematical models and simulations, in the widest sense, and understanding and interpreting such models and results, is also crucial in ever more lines of work. Therefore combining the study of mathematics with that of a foreign language and culture, and a year of study abroad, prepares you for many things you will find in your work after university. This is a four year course in which the third year is normally spent abroad in a country where the language of study is normally spoken (normally in a Mathematics Department of a University).

Employability is embedded into modules from the first year onwards and right from the first lecture. We explain the degree skills which are taught throughout the modules and offer a number of optional employability modules. The technical skills you will acquire are in great demand, as are the skills of understanding and analysing problems, together with communicating the results in an international language.
