Course Details

Secondary Design and Technology (Food & Textiles), PGCE

Course Description

The Design and Technology programme consists of a variety of learning experiences designed for those wishing to train as teachers. Most of the programme focuses upon practical training in teaching and learning related skills. This practical training is underpinned by the development of knowledge and understanding of education theories, ideas and concepts and by enhancing your awareness of current educational issues and developments. For the purposes of gaining Qualified Teacher Status, our training focus is on the 11-16 age range. The programme normally runs over 36 weeks from September to July. Twenty-four weeks will be spent in partner schools – generally split into two separate and contrasting placements. The remaining time will be taken up in seminars, tutorials and assignment activities designed to support your professional development. The UEL Secondary Team also offers additional subject knowledge development courses in Food and Textiles which are designed to give our trainees the basic knowledge of the two areas and of health and safety skills in order to embark on their school experience with confidence. The subject knowledge development courses start before the full PGCE programme in early September.

Career outcomes

There are a number of ways in which teachers can progress in their careers, either within the classroom or in a leadership role. In secondary schools you could move up and across the management structure to gain responsibility for: * a particular subject as head of department, faculty or curriculum * a particular age group as head of year or key stage coordinator * a particular area such as special educational needs or pastoral care (ie personal guidance) ultimately, you could progress to a senior management position such as deputy or assistant head and, of course, head teacher. Whoever you are, whatever your background, we want to help you make the most of your time at UEL and ensure that your course will help lead you to where you want to go. UEL's dedicated Employability and Enterprise Team (EET) is on hand to support you throughout your studies and beyond. Not only should your course help lead you to the job you want, but also the skills and experience you gain along the way can prove invaluable both in starting and developing your career.
