Course Description

Chemical Engineering is concerned with large-scale chemical and biochemical processes in which materials undergo change. The fundamental concepts, principles and theories underpinning Chemical Engineering will be taught, with core knowledge in mathematics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics; mass and heat transfer, chemical reactions; materials; process control; safety, health and environment. The distinctive feature of the course is that as well as teaching traditional chemical engineering there is also a focus on advanced materials engineering based on our excellent research. The MEng course comprises an extra fourth academic year of more advanced and in-depth study, and enables the fastest route to Chartered Engineer status. As a qualified Chemical Engineer you will understand how to alter the chemical, biochemical or physical state of a substance, to create everything from healthcare products to food and water to energy.

Career outcomes

Chemical Engineers are equipped with many transferable skills and job prospects are therefore excellent. Most Chemical Engineers get employment in industries where large-scale conversion of raw materials is involved and also in the process industries, for example, gas, nuclear, paper, textiles, food, pharmaceutical, oil, recycling industries. Employers range from large multinational companies to smaller ones. Many of our past graduates have found employment in major companies such as BP, Astra Zeneca, Pfizer, BASF, etc.
