As a student on this MA you will be introduced to the key theories, debates and approaches in the inter-disciplinary field of media and cultural studies, studying the work of European cultural theorists through to more recent Anglo-American and East Asian writing on globalised culture, brands and commodities, queer theory, and platform culture. On this programme you will be introduced to theoretical and methodological approaches focused on the analysis of power, value, identity and difference in contemporary media and cultural life. You will learn to use theory and empirical methods to critically analyse the role of electronic, print, digital and visual media in structuring everyday experience. You will also actively engage in empirical and textual analysis of how gender, sexuality and ‘race’ are constructed in global media cultures and gain understanding of how media reproduce and challenge power relations. This degree does not focus on developing vocational skills in journalism, film-making, public relations or marketing. However, it is a degree that will teach you skills in critical thinking, independent research, and analysis highly relevant for development and innovation in the cultural and media sectors.
