Pharmaceutical Science BSc(Hons)

Course Description

Pharmaceutical science is concerned with the design and development of new drugs for clinical purposes. It explores the different sources of medicine, how they work, their different formulations (eg tablet, cream, inhaler), and how they are analysed and tested. This course provides an understanding of all aspects of the pharmaceutical industry. What will you study? You will study topics ranging from introductory pharmaceutical chemistry and the basic principles of physiology and biochemistry, through to the design, synthesis and testing of biologically active molecules. Other topics include: pharmacology, pharmaceutical formulation, methods of drug delivery, pharmaceutical analysis and drug legislation. Career outcomes

The pharmaceuticals sector represents a growth area within the UK chemicals industry, and there are good job prospects for pharmaceutical scientists. Our graduates work in areas of the industry such as research, development, quality assurance, marketing and sales, while many have gained jobs in laboratories in hospitals and in educational establishments. Some of our students progress to further studies at MSc, MPhil and PhD level.
