Candidates for the Ph.D. in Political Science at Kent State University focus their study in two of our three areas of concentration: American Politics, Transnational and Comparative Politics, or Conflict Analysis and Management. In addition to their subfield studies, all graduate students benefit from rigorous methodological training. Our graduate faculty are established scholars who have contributed significant work to their fields of study. Broadly but not exclusively focused on the dynamics surrounding representation, equity, conflict, human rights, development and conflict resolution, our program enables PhD candidates to develop their own research questions in an interdisciplinary and theoretically sophisticated way. Students work with faculty mentors throughout their degree program and often develop and present their own research at regional or national conferences. Ph.D. candidates complete 36 credit hours of coursework prior to the research hours necessary to complete the dissertation. Requirements include the core courses, the concentration courses, a research tool and the teaching course.
