Course Description

There are a number of Whiting School of Engineering policies related to Ph.D. students, which are listed here. Ph.D. student requirements for the Civil Engineering Department include: 10 Courses* Department Qualifying Examination (DQE) Annual Meetings and Reports to Ph.D. Advisory Committee Annual Review Graduate Board Oral Examination (GBO) Responsible Conduct of Research Course (AS.360.625) Academic Ethics Course (EN.500.603) Final Ph.D. Thesis Defense *All courses must be completed with a grade of B or better. At least 8 of the 10 courses must be at the 600- or 700- level. PhD students entering with a Master’s degree may receive a maximum of 2 transfer courses if and only if (a) the courses to be transferred were taken at the graduate level and completed with at least a grade of B (or equivalent), (b) have not been used toward the completion of another degree at any institution (proof must be provided to this effect), (c) have been approved by the student’s permanent research advisor, and (d) have been approved by the Department Chair and Director of Graduate Studies. All of these conditions must be met and provided to the Academic Program Coordinator before the end of the first academic year, after which no transfer courses will be permitted. Students transferring courses from another university must fulfill the remainder of the course requirements with courses only at the 600- or 700-level. Typically, in the Spring of the first year a student’s permanent advisor will consult with the Department Chair and Director of Graduate Studies to determine any appropriate transfer courses. These credits may accelerate the timeline given below. These are guidelines, and exceptions may be made under special circumstances.
