Graduate Diploma in Engineering (Water & Waste Engineering)

Course Description

Improving and protecting water quality is a global issue. 2.5 billion people currently live in "water stressed" regions. The path for sustainable growth requires more than just green solutions, but also requires blue ones. Water is the single biggest factor which can limit or enhance economic growth. Be part of the global blue economy and help contribute to fixing the world’s water quality and shortage problems. Physical, chemical, and biological processes in an engineering context are presented. This includes aeration, sedimentation, filtration, biological treatment, disinfection, and waste water processing. Emerging advanced treatment methodologies are introduced. Engineered and natural processes for wastewater treatment are also covered. What you will learn *Design, specify and plan implementation of water and waste systems *Learn how to treat surface and ground water sources to make drinking water *Understand disposal of water treatment plant wastes in an environmentally friendly manner *Gain skills to treat community and industrial wastewater and stormwater *Consider social, political and environment impacts *Learn about physical, chemical and biological processes in engineering – including aeration, sedimentation, filtration, biological treatment, disinfection and waste water processing

Career outcomes

This programme will enable students to consider careers in civil engineering specialising in water and waste. Students may undertake roles such as design engineers or project managers. Well educated, skilled and experienced graduates are required to operate and manage vital water and waste treatment services and storm water management. The demand for such graduates is already high and will only increase over coming years as environmental standards for water quality increase and pressures on our water supplies continue to grow.
