Course Description

The Upper Iowa Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) is a limited admissions program designed to prepare students for a career as a successful healthcare professional. Upon admission into the program, students are educated in the management of healthcare problems associated with the physically active population including; prevention and health promotion, emergency and acute care, clinical evaluation and diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, healthcare administration, and professional development and responsibility. Students who successfully complete the requirements of the athletic training education major will be eligible to take the athletic training profession's Board of Certification (BOC) Examination. Upper Iowa's Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) and is housed in the Andres School of Education. Graduates from our program have established successful careers as athletic trainers in secondary schools, colleges and universities, sports medicine clinics, physician clinics, and other athletic health care settings. Many graduates of the athletic training education program choose to pursue graduate degrees in athletic training or other related fields.

Career outcomes

1. The student will demonstrate mastery of skills necessary of an entry-level athletic trainer as defined by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Education Competencies. 2. The student will critically appraise healthcare situations and adapt patient care decisions based on the context, population and the evidence available. 3. The student will demonstrate professional behaviors, including the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing. 4. The student will explain the scope of practice of the profession and the role it plays in the healthcare community. 5. The student will provide care, respectfully and effectively, to a diverse population. 6. The student will value the importance of lifelong learning by creating a continuing education plan.
