Course Description

Our supportive, small group teaching approach is highly effective. You will benefit from modern facilities, extensive clinical training and a superior learning location. Your clinical placements take place in a range of locations, and start in your first year of study. Hands-on experience continues throughout your degree: In Year 4 you will be based in either Townsville or Cairns, and in years 5 and 6 you will experience our clinical school sites in Cairns, Mackay, Darwin and Townsville, plus extended placements in small rural and remote communities. Our degree aspires to what is described by the World Health Organisation as “socially accountable medical education – a medical school accepting its obligation to direct education, research and service to priority health concerns of communities that it has a mandate to serve.”

Career outcomes

Our graduates are highly regarded as work ready, with a strong foundation in biomedical and social sciences, and extensive clinical experience. After graduation you can register to work as an intern in Australia or New Zealand. Your internship takes one year. You then progress to further training in a chosen specialisation such as general practice, surgery, obstetrics, anaesthetics, or emergency medicine, for example. Employment for generalist medical practitioners is expected to grow strongly and earnings are very high for some medical specialists
