Course Description

The Journalism and Mass Communication program at Humboldt State University is designed to prepare students for a career in journalism, broadcasting, public relations or related field. It provides students with an understanding of the rights, responsibilities and role of the mass media and helps students develop better critical thinking skills. We prepare students for graduate or law school. Our classes are small, which allows us to give students our individual attention. We provide effective mentoring, advising and career counseling. We guide our students through their university career because we want them to succeed. The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in four areas of emphasis: news editorial, broadcast news, public relations or media studies. In our skills courses, students gain experience gathering, writing and producing the news. Freshmen majors get immediate hands-on training and can play music or deliver the news on the student radio station KRFH.net. More advanced radio production students can apply to the on-campus National Public Radio Station KHSU-FM. Students can write for the student newspaper The Lumberjack, Osprey magazine or JournAlum. Our television workshop students produce video programs that air on local television. Our faculty have major media experience. We are equipped to teach the latest digital technologies and traditional journalism skills. Our strong ties to media professionals and successful alumni help our students land jobs and internships. We help our students build a solid portfolio and resume to show potential employers. Journalism majors in all emphases are expected to take courses in the social and physical sciences, creative arts and liberal arts to create a minor or area of study outside of journalism. We encourage our students to study a second language.
