Art History of the Low Countries in its European Context

Course Description

Research in Artistic and Achitectural Heritage This Research Master’s programme offers a selective graduate programme that prepares students specifically for a career in scholarly research, in order to train a new generation of researchers in this field. It focuses on the visual arts and architecture of the Low Countries, in order to train a new generation of researchers in the artistic and architectural heritage of these countries, studied in an international context. Particular attention will be paid to issues relating to art production and patronage, the mobility of artists, the international spread of style and repertoire, and problems of an iconological nature. Collaboration with Leuven The core staff members of this programme work closely with the Art History Department of the Catholic University of Leuven. Utrecht University and the University of Leuven have a long-standing tradition of excellent research into the national art histories of Flanders and the Netherlands, respectively. By joining forces, they are able to test and redefine the validity of these essentially 19th-century historiographies and arrive at a more balanced view of the history of Netherlandish art and how this relates to the situation of the arts in Southern Europe
