Course Description

This joint honours BA in Education and Fine Art will encourage your appreciation of fine art whilst equipping you with the vocational skills required to teach and communicate your subject. This course is perfect for aspiring teachers, tutors and lecturers with a particular interest in fine art. The course will provide you with a general introduction to a broad range of traditional art media and fundamental concepts of artistic practice, before moving progressively to more specialised, comprehensive, and deeper study of the subject. In tandem with this, you will also learn the latest developments in the theory of teaching and learning and classroom management, to enable you to pursue a successful career in teaching. You will find this to be a varied and stimulating course with a strong vocational outcome. You can also tailor your learning to suit your interests, opting for modules from both subject areas. Your choices may include Painting Topics; Book Illustration; Interdisciplinary Studio Practice; Early Years Provision; Children's Rights; Working with Play, and many more. This course is delivered by the School of Education and Lifelong Learning, which recently relocated to new premises on the main campus at the University, in conjunction with the School of Art. You will benefit from the latest learning and teaching environments, the expertise of our experienced staff members, and the partnerships the School of Education maintains with communities, schools and authorities across Wales and the UK. This joint honours degree in Education and Fine Art will be of great use to you in a range of graduate jobs, particularly in schools and colleges. Not only will you be thoroughly equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to teach and a high level of subject expertise, you will be a fluent communicator, a careful worker with a variety of materials, and a strong debater able to form compelling arguments. Your BA in Education and Fine Art will prepare you for teaching and a broad range of employment or training options. Your teaching knowledge will help you establish a career as a community education officer, early years teacher, education administrator, teacher, lecturer, special educational needs teacher or youth worker. Your artistic expertise will help you in a career as an art therapist, community arts worker, fashion designer, art critic, illustrator, printmaker or textile designer. Recent statistics from HESA (Higher Education Statistics Agency) show that nearly 79% of Art graduates and over 88% of Education graduates find either paid employment or continue with further study upon graduation. Throughout your training you will develop a wealth of subject-specific skills and other generic professional skills that can be easily transferred into almost any graduate or professional employment situation. You will be able to: analyse and interpret visual data quickly and efficiently; select and deploy the most effective solutions for practical challenges; and deliver cogent and compelling arguments.
