Ba(hons) Applied Languages and Translation (French and Spanish)

Course Description

This course produces graduates who can use their languages working in a variety of areas ranging from business and administration to teaching. You study two languages, one of which can be taken from scratch. We place strong emphasis on developing your practical skills in tasks such as translating, interpreting and oral communication. Language work concentrates on practical and professional usage. In addition, you will study the background to society in Spain and France as well as Europe in general. The third year is spent studying or working in both countries.

Career outcomes

Opportunities exist for linguists in a variety of fields (translation, interpreting, a range of national and international organizations). This course provides a valuable preparation for entry to areas such as industry and commerce, public administration, education and the media: former graduates are currently working as interpreters, translators, teachers and civil servants, or as representatives of firms such as Guinness (NI) or organizations such as the British Council. One graduate is now running her own successful export company in NI.
