BA in Art

Course Description

ART major The BA or BS in art is a four-year liberal arts degree focusing on studio art practice. Students receive the bachelor of arts (BA) or bachelor of science (BS) degree with a major in art or digital arts. In addition, students may access art studio offerings as nonmajors, provided they complete the appropriate prerequisites. Two courses, ART 101 Understanding Contemporary Media and ART 111 The Artist Experience, serve the larger university community as arts-and-letters group-satisfying courses. As an art student, you will gain technical and conceptual understanding and develop a unique and individual approach to your work. Starting out with core foundations courses that introduce strategies of experimentation, making, and critical thinking, you will also take courses on the history of art and architecture and seminar classes that expand your understanding of art and its potential. The department aims for our art majors to learn to think critically, communicate clearly, and work creatively. Students develop an understanding of materials and tools, formal possibilities, technical skills, critical inquiry, ways of seeing, as well as fluency in visual languages and the articulation of meaning. They gain an understanding of the larger context of art through history of art and architecture and theory courses, study abroad opportunities, gallery exhibitions, and our active visiting lecture series. The curriculum includes coursework in eight media areas—painting, sculpture, printmaking, digital media, photography, ceramics, fibers, and metalsmithing and jewelry. While all art majors share the basic requirements, you have the flexibility to pursue more advanced course work in the media area or areas of primary interest.
