Course Description

Why Study Modern Languages? Carole is an exchange student from Luxembourg. She speaks Luxembourgish, French, German and English. José is from Argentina. He speaks Spanish, English and Italian. Yoshimi is from Japan. Of course, she also speaks English. Have you ever wondered at visitors to Canada who can communicate in two, three or even more languages? In the Department of Modern Languages, we believe that languages are for everyone; and that in an increasingly global culture they are the key not only to getting around the world, but also to preserving and appreciating the diversity of national cultures. About the Modern Languages Program Thanks to our small class size, innovative instructors and the latest in language-learning technology, we make language learning a lively and satisfying experience. At the beginners' and intermediate level we teach you to communicate with native speakers, orally and in writing, and introduce you to the everyday life of the speakers of that language as well as to their music, films and books. You can continue your study of spoken and written French, German, Japanese and Spanish to an advanced. Whatever the level and whatever the language, we teach our classes in the language being studied. So, Japanese courses are taught in Japanese and Spanish courses are taught in Spanish. The U of L is the only University in Alberta to offer Co-operative Education in Arts and Science
