BA Ancient History and Philosophy

Course Description

Ancient History Core modules in your first year will introduce you to the events and social and cultural trends that impacted the Ancient Greek and Roman worlds, while you’ll also have the chance to learn Latin or Ancient Greek. You’ll build on this knowledge over the next two years, deepening your understanding of political systems across the classical world as well as debates and methodologies in researching ancient history. You’ll also choose from a range of optional modules, before demonstrating the skills you’ve gained with an independently researched dissertation on a topic of your choice. Philosophy Core modules in your first year will introduce you to central topics and teach you to construct arguments. This will lay the foundation for the next two years, where you’ll have a huge range of modules to choose from, ranging from ethics and politics, language and logic, the mind, the nature of knowledge, the philosophy of religion and the philosophy of science to the philosophy of art. In your final year you will have developed research and analytical skills that you can showcase when you undertake an independent research project on a topic of your choice.

Your degree will equip you with a wide range of skills across different disciplines that employers actively seek. You’ll have good research skills, and you’ll be able to analyse complex information from multiple sources before drawing your own conclusions. You’ll then be able to communicate and defend your views clearly, either verbally or in writing. In addition, you’ll have strong research and organisational skills and be confident working independently or in a team. All of these qualities are very attractive to employers, and graduates have pursued careers reflecting the diversity of their degrees. They’ve gone on to be successful in education, the media, law, publishing, the civil service, business and finance and the charity sector to name a few. Many others have also pursued postgraduate study.
