Course Description

nstantly developed. Mathematicians work to expand our understanding of the logical structure of mathematics itself and to develop applications of mathematics in the natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and business. The Department of Mathematics undergraduate program exposes students to a broad spectrum of mathematics. It develops problem-solving and critical analysis skills that are useful for all professions. It offers opportunities for student research. Students with mathematics degrees pursue careers in teaching, actuarial science, statistics, finance, information technology, and other areas of business. A KU math degree prepares students to go to graduate school in mathematics or in a related field. The department offers honors versions of first- and second-year courses. Students can earn departmental honors by taking advanced courses and doing a research project. Students interested in teaching high school mathematics earn a bachelor's degree in mathematics while working toward licensure in the UKanTeach program. Math majors often choose to combine mathematics with another major in engineering, science, social science, or humanities.
