Architecture, Landscape and Urbanism, MSc

Course Description

Our MSc Architecture, Landscape and Urbanism programme encourages students to develop advanced and speculative approaches to the design of cities, landscape and territories. It promotes strong design methods and the integration of new and innovative technologies to address the challenges facing contemporary cities, such as urban growth, climate change, globalisation and social inequality. The programme is designed for students of architecture, landscape architecture, engineering and related disciplines, who wish to enhance their academic, intellectual and professional skills. This programme interrogates the growing influence of landscape on urban, social and ecological processes. It provides a platform from which to address the conditions of contemporary urbanism, such as extreme environmental events, shifting economic agendas, new forms of public space and the transformations to urban infrastructures. And it employs advanced design techniques and innovative methodologies to develop speculative designs, strategies and interventions. Our programme centres on the design studio, where students are introduced to innovative approaches in landscape architecture and encouraged to develop design speculations for future landscapes and cities. Visits to London's art galleries (such as the Tate Modern, ICA), museums (such as the British Museum) and important landscapes (such as the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Kew Gardens, Royal Park Greenwich) are part of the degree. Students are encouraged to attend field-study courses abroad (recently to New York and Istanbul) which inform their design projects. International lectures are hosted in the department, recently including Alberto Perez-Gomez, James Corner (Field Operations), Will Alsop (All Design), Charles Jencks, Martin Rein-Cano (Topotek 1), Hanif Kara and Kathryn Gustafson (GP+B). Details of international events, open lectures and examples of student portfolios can be found on the collective blog written by the landscape architecture and urbanism staff and students, The Landscape. The programme is based in the Department of Architecture and Landscape in a new state of the art building designed. It is equipped with fourteen green roofs, aquaponics lab, digital workshops, model workshop, photography suite, film studios and animation suites. The building also includes extensive design studios, a world-class library and two gallery spaces. The building is located in the heart of Greenwich, the newest addition to a suite of magnificent buildings that occupy the UNESCO World Heritage site and the location of the Greenwich Prime Meridian. This programme is designed for those aiming to develop advanced design skills, for use in landscape, architecture and urban design practice, and for those aiming to enhance their academic skills and/or go on to doctoral study.
