BA Art History and Visual Culture and Drama with Study Abroad

Course Description

Art History can be studied with Classical Studies, combining these two subjects to provide greater insight into classical art through the study of ancient languages. The programme enables you to divide your time equally between the two related subject areas. Art History provides an excellent grounding in both traditional fine arts and contemporary visual forms. Through the flexible structure of the degree, you can study painting, sculpture, and illustration and follow your own personal interests through a wide range of optional modules. Classical Studies offers access to the culture and thought of the ancient world through its literature and artefacts. Many of the texts are taught in translation, but you’ll also learn one of the classical languages (Latin or Greek) in detail for two years. The programme combines the traditional virtues of rigorous attention to the nuances and subtleties of language with some of the most exciting and innovative approaches to the ancient world available today. Not only will you access the subject from a variety of angles (literary, literary-critical, philosophical, cultural-historical, art-historical), but you’ll also be encouraged to question the many intellectual and political uses to which the Classical world is put in the modern world. No previous knowledge of Latin or Greek is required.
